pf, pf (2026) working title

Solo and group scores, dances, sounds, and situations still brewing in Untitled landscapes
Pf pf.jpg

In pf, pf I will explore practices developed during the creative processes of the last three works which have not materialized into a finished work. Among those are : the dreamed dances, and the listener’s dance. pf, pf will be a chance to bring them to the center and to dive deeper into them as materials for performance.

The work and processes of pf, pf explore the language of describing a dance, as a poetic and intelligent means of engaging with the specificity of a living artwork, and engaging with the world while constructing it. How to interpret dance, how to perform dance, how to preserve a dance, how to create a dance which leaves space for the observer to enter it…

While working on Landscape Stories, five dances emerged from a dream. Two of the five dreamed dances became springboard material for Landscape Stories, as well as the solo Dance is the archeologist, or an idol in the bone. The next three dreamed dances to be explored specifically and in greater depth are : la danse des éphémères, la danse musicale, and la danse du corps.

listener's dance consists of dancing with and/or talking while headphones play a private soundtrack in the dancer’s ears. This is the performer's score, a secret ear. In the listener's dance, how one listens and what one hears filters through the performer’s body, presence, and actions, and this is the dance.

It’s by way of listener's dance that I wish to embark on a new collaboration with sound artist Charlotte Imbault. A variety of recycled and found sound documents have been previously used in the soundtracks of listener's dance. I would like to experiment with intentionally developing sound material specific to Untitled landscapes : the dreamed dances; current site-based concerns; and writings and audio materials that have accumulated over the years since the project began.

Charlotte brings a honed sensibility and experience to creating spaces and situations for listening, whether it be individual or group listening contexts. I’m curious how the listening context could produce a new frame for observing a dance, a frame in which an audience is brought to observe dance through their listening. I’m inspired by the different levels of intimacy and sociability in listening that her various sound dispositives generate. I’m looking forward to the presence of the field recording and the sound document, how these bring into play different levels of reality and imagination in the reception of a performance work with a fixed duration.
